Bitra
Family is a touchy subject
with Kym. Her father, a traditional holder in Bitra, wanted sons
so he could expand his holdings. Kymra, born in the middle of several
girls, was fostered off to the main Hold at the tender age of four.
Her mother failed to be a prominant figure in toddler Kym's early life.
She was a weak-willed woman, concerned more about her husband and his needs
and wants; he had taken a mistress in his efforts to spawn a son, and Mraphne
was desperately attempting to win him back.
Kymra's sister Evieleen, who
was significantly older, took the place of a mother. Indeed, she
practically doted on Kymra; when the young child left the security of her
family, it was an upsetting experience. Her foster-mother couldn't,
or wouldn't, give Kymra the affection and attention she needed -- hence,
the exuberant, precocious child became more and more withdrawn. Visits
to the family hold were hardly frequent and were reserved for important
events. The young girl's natural curiousity was cut off, and she
became considerably quiet. Kymra failed to have many friends and
became the outcast and scapegoat for Bitra's children. She increasingly
took to exploring alone or helping with necessary chores. She was
not much good at desirable skills, however: weaving, mending, cooking,
and gambling were not her fortes.
On her fourteenth Turnday,
Kymra's father came to evaluate his daughter. Needless to say, he
was far from pleased with the results and bluntly told his daughter that
she was not welcome at the hold: she was a burden, and he wanted
none of her. Although not incredibly surprised, Kymra was hurt by
the rejection of her father.
Ruatha And Beyond
Another Turn passed before
Kymra decided she had had enough of Bitra. Hitching a ride with a
trading caravan, she stole from the Hold late one night. Ruatha was
the caravan's destination, and it was there that she hopped off.
The Ruathans welcomed the wayward teen; she blossomed, growing more confidant
day by day.
Hardly a Turn had passed when
a greenrider from Bahrain Weyr arrived and demanded that an irritable Kymra
help her card yarn from storages to her dragon. Talina's Jiyuth,
bells a'jingling, decided that she wished to bring Kym back to the Weyr,
too, and Talina was obliged to ask Kymra to Stand upon the sands.
The latest clutch was hardening, and Candidates were needed. Kymra
could do naught be agree -- and she was wisked away to the Weyr.
Some could say that she reverted
to her earliest ways during Candidacy; her precosity reemerged, and withen
days, she was involved with harmless pranks. A number of friends
were made, and finally the day came when the Candidates were ushered onto
the sands to the hum of the dragons. Nervous yet excited, Kym watched
as eggs hatched; one by one, dragonets Impressed, leaving Kymra without
a lifemate.
The teen was disappointed.
Her closest friends were busy leading very different lives, although they
did buoy her spirits, assuring Kymra that her dragon simply wasn't shelled
yet. Kymra only half-believed them, yet it was these acts of friendship
that solidified her decision to stay on at Bahrain.
Bahrain
Staying at the Weyr carried
a consequence: the knot of Assistant Steward. Kymra was content with
her new role -- the disappointment of not Impressing made her mature noticibly.
The enthusiasm was not dampened, but moderated with a new seriousness.
She ended up spending much of her time in the storage caverns; they became
her realm, something familiar in a hectic world.
Once again, Kymra's world
turned upside down after about two somewhat-normal Turns. The time,
it was C'zar's playful bronze Asarith who demanded that she Stand at the
upcoming Hatching. The circumstances were significantly different:
all four queens had clutched at the same time, and over a hundred eggs
would hatch. Kymra agreed once Caz promised her the use of his robe
and found herself a cot in the crowded barracks.
Cramped quarters soon became
almost unbearable, and so when a fellow Candidate named Melinde suggested
hiding out for awhile, Kymra agreed, along with two others, Eldana and
Fernox. It was in this new arrangementthat Kym's friendship with
Eldana deepened. The younger girl had looked up to the world-saavy
Candidate earlier, but Kymra soon became a dubious role-model. They
even Stood together, accompanied by Nehyn, also on the sands for the second
time and wearing an incredibly short robe.
They didn't Stand together
for too long, though -- a newly hatched green soon spied Kymra and her
hand-me-down robe and proclaimed the girl hers forever. The Impressions
of the other two occured later -- N'hn and green Ecariath, Eldana and blue
Ilyth. Kymra shed her old name that night, becoming simply Kym.
It was more than just a change of name, however; for Kym, it was a way
of commiting herself to her new life with Gwyneth and severing her ties
to her past. Kym vowed to never speak of her origins, dedicating
her life to Gwyneth and the future.
Weyrlinghood tasks dominated
Kym's time. They weren't tedious, however, for the teen's time with
Gwyneth was more than she'd ever dreamed. The friendships she made
during weyrlinghood served to last her a lifetime: Eldana, N'hn,
Rivkan and brown Epionth, J'na and green Morianth, F'ox and brown Muldereth.
Her relationships with the Weyrlingmaster and his assistants were something
less than formal; she had been a Candidate with C'zar, Tam, and Arial before
Impression.
The day finally came when the
weyrlings graduated, and Kym found herself placed in the Garabaldi Wing.
Content with her new duties, she awaited the day upon which Gwyneth would
rise with dread, watching other greenriders' dragons take to ths skies.
A move to Xanadu took her mind off the flight, but not for long.
Kym was, in a word, afraid.
She hated the idea of not having her body under her own control, but caught
up in her green's emotions. She explained her problem to Rivka, and
the brownrider advised her to take care of it before the flight so that
she'd have some experience; Kym said she'd think about it. While
basking upon the beaches, Gwyneth's hide took on the characteristic glow
of proddiness unbeknownst to Kym. Rivka and N'hn joined the greenrider
while N'hn's own lifemate was proddy as well. Emotional -- moody
-- Kym confronted Rivka again. N'hn didn't like secrets and, of course,
wanted to know. Eventually, he found out, and after Rivka left, offered
to help a sulking Kym out with her problem. It was a spur-of-the-moment
thing, and Kym unexpectedly agreed. They went to the Great Hall to
eat, first, where the pair was joined by several others. It was without
noticed that both Gwyneth and Ecariath rose, blooding their kills while
riders scrambled for the ground weyrs.
In the end, it was T'gger's
Pounceth who caught, and T'gger who Kym awoke next to the following morning,
not N'hn. As fate would have it, Kym's affair with the brownrider
was not a one night stand. They continued to see each other up until
Gwyneth's next flight.
Luck was not with T'gger,
apparently, and it was blue Ilyth -- /Eldana's/ Ilyth -- who captured Gwyneth.
The bluerider confessed to her role-model that what she felt was more than
friendship moments before a very drunk T'gger staggered in. He was
not pleased with the situation -- Kym with Eldana -- and made his opinions
very clear. The greenrider eventually ran from the hall.
After a long chat with T'on,
another greenrider from her clutch, Kym reconciled with T'gger. She
was not willing to leave Eldana hanging, however, and the trio came to
an understanding. T'gger and Eldana shared Kym's affections jealously;
it was not until one stormy night at Xanadu Hold's cancelled Gather that
Kym's significant others took an interest in each other as well.
After a fiasco involving Garabaldi
and Rishiri's wingleaders, the Weyrleader R'afael approached Kym.
He gave a new knot to her, along with the reins to Garabaldi. She,
in turn, offered new knots to Rivka and M'rika, brown Audath's rider, as
her wingseconds. Kym, herself, drew upon her earlier experiences
with responsibility as she was faced with another, larger leadership role.
Shortly afterwards, newly
graduated weyrling Z'ia's green Nieth rose, and T'gger's Pounceth caught.
Zi'a flaunted the fact to a very proddy Kym. She attempted to persuade
T'on to give her a sword; she wouldn't kill Zi'a, she promised, only maim
her. Luckily, T'on possessed more sense than Kym. Even after
Gwyneth's flight, Kym's animosity for Zi'a continued. It didn't help
matters when Pounceth caught Gwyneth, either. Jealous over T'gger's
attentions, yet angry with him for spending more time than required with
Zi'a, Kym was faced with the task of knotting the younger greenrider as
a Garabaldi wingrider. After baiting each other day after day, Kym
reluctantly tossed a knot Zi'a's way. She had a heart-felt conversation
with T'gger as well over the status of their relationship.
Turns passed, and one day
brought a young man to Xanadu. He sat on Kym's table -- an atrocity,
in her proddy eyes -- and she rounded on him angrily. A close questioning
turned up the fact that he was, in fact, her nephew. Kym's attitude
changed immediately, and the hopeful Weaver-to-be found himself spending
the night in her weyr. Convinced that Kym was less than sane, he
hurried away to the Xanadu Weaverhall in the morning. But when another
of Xanadu's golds clutched, Kym decided to visit her nephew. Gwyneth
promptly Searched Celeviel along with another hapless person who happened
to be in the right spot and the right time, Shallain. At the Hatching,
Kym tried to persuade various greens to go Impress her relative, but a
green-tinged bronze got there first. Celeviel became C'viel, weyrling
to bronze Jhyth.
Fort
Kym eventually got fed up with her semi-weyrmates' consistant bickering, and when T'gger and Eldana aruged about who had wrecked Kym's favorite rug, a keepsake from Bahrain, she unexpectedly threw them out. When Gwyneth next rose, Fort Weyr's bronze Riorth caught to Kym's surprise. It was an unusual occurance for bronzes to catch greens; with Gwyneth's propensity for aerial acrobatics, it was virtually impossible. Kym got another surprise when she awoke the next day: there was no trace of P'vias, Riorth's rider. Feeling slighted, Kym visited Fort to track down the bronzerider and demand an apology. P'vias pronounced them weyrmated and Kym agreed to stay on at the Weyr on a vacation from the monsoon rains and her duties as the newly promoted Weyrsecond. Rumors soon spread as Fortian speculated about the greenrider in P'vias' weyr, and some even suggested that they were in love. But Kym fled as spring came to Xanadu despite numerous threats on the bronzerider's part.
Xanadu, Take Two
Sometime later, Weyrlingmaster T'on recieved a letter from his mother. The fact was discovered that T'on and Kym were cousins, which Kym strongly denied. In another bout of proddiness, she postulated that T'on was in fact T'ron, and that his green had at one time been a bronze. Between tacking up Oldtimer posters and fighting yet again with the greenrider in the Great Hall, Gwyneth rose and Kym returned to a semi-normal state. She eventually apologized and recognized their relationship on their mothers' sides.
